Russian Alphabet

To begin learning the Russian language, one must first learn the Cyrillic alphabet. The Russian language uses the Cyrillic alphabet. Many letters are similar to English, some are totally different, and others are false cognates. These are the letters with corresponding English sound transliterations in order:
А - "a" as in father
Б - "b" as in boy
В - "v" as in very
Г - "g" as in good
Д - "d" as in dog
Е - "ye" as in yes
Ё - "yo" as in yolk
Ж - "zh" or "s" as in pleasure - like a French "je"
З - "z" as in zoo
И - "e" as in me
Й - "y" as in yes
К - "k" as in kitten
Л - "l" as in lamp
М - "m" as in map
Н - "n" as in not
О - "o" as in more
П - "p" as in pet
Р - "r" - a rolled "r"
С - "s" as in see
Т - "t" as in tip
У - "oo" as in boot
Ф - "f" as in face
Х - "ch" as in German Bach
Ц - "ts" as in "its"
Ч - "ch" as in chip
Ш - "sh" as in ship
Щ - "shch" as in Welsh Cheese
ъ - hard sound which is not pronounced
Ы - "e" as in roses
ь - soft sign which is not pronounced
Э - "e" as in met
Ю - "u" sound like the word "you"
Я - "ya" as in yard
